🌿𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 (𝗩𝗡𝗥𝗟𝗜) 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳 𝗖𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁🌿 I had the privilege of participating in VNRLI in 2019–2020, and it remains one of the most impactful professional development experiences of my career. VNRLI brings together natural resource professionals from across Virginia to build skills in leadership, conflict management, and collaborative problem solving. It’s a great mix of hands-on learning, field experiences, and real conversations about the kinds of challenges we’re all working on. One of the highlights for me was visiting Tangier Island and seeing firsthand how sea-level rise and erosion are impacting the community. It’s a completely different perspective when you’re standing there and seeing those changes up close. I've added pictures from that trip to this post. The program blends hands-on learning, field experiences, and meaningful conversations across sectors. From Chesapeake Bay water quality to agriculture, energy, and public engagement, each session expands both perspective and professional network. If you’re an environmental professional in Virginia looking to grow as a leader and collaborator, I highly recommend applying. Applications close on June 5, 2026. ➡️ Learn more and apply here: https://lnkd.in/e28tubxd The program does involve travel throughout Virginia, so be sure to review the "2026-2027 Program Dates and Topics" section to ensure that you will be available. I'm happy to chat if you’re considering applying! 😊 #vnrli #vnrlialumni #uvaien

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to tour the Bow Creek Stormwater Park construction site as part of my role on the City of Virginia Beach Flood Prevention Bond Referendum Oversight Board. Seeing it in-person really reinforced just how transformative this project will be for the area. This site, which is located next to the Bow Creek Recreation Center, was once a City-owned golf course. Now, it’s being reimagined as a critical piece of flood protection infrastructure in an area that has long lacked sufficient surface water storage. Rather than relying solely on traditional stormwater systems, Bow Creek is designed to work 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 water. The park will store stormwater during major rain events, helping reduce flooding impacts to surrounding neighborhoods while improving water quality and restoring natural systems. What makes this project especially exciting is its ability to serve multiple purposes at once: protecting homes, enhancing environmental resilience, and creating a public space the community can enjoy. Of all the projects funded through the Flood Protection Program, this one stands out to me as the most innovative. It’s a powerful example of how thoughtful design can turn a longstanding challenge into an opportunity. I am looking forward to seeing this space continue to take shape! This past weekend, my daughter and I joined VWU student Gavin Wehr in volunteering at Virginia Wesleyan University, where we had the opportunity to teach 45 Girl Scouts about soil as a vital natural resource as they worked toward earning an environmental badge. It was inspiring to see several VWU students dedicate their time to lead additional environmental science stations, creating a hands-on, engaging experience for the scouts. Grateful to be part of a community that shows up, gives back, and helps spark curiosity in the next generation! 🌱

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Environment Virginia Symposium, and to give back in a meaningful way by serving as a mentor during the Young Professionals Networking Session as an alumna of the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute (VNRLI). Connecting with college students and early-career professionals was genuinely energizing. Their curiosity, drive, and commitment to environmental stewardship left me feeling hopeful about where we’re headed in Virginia. I also appreciated the opportunity to share insight from my own journey as a soil scientist, GIS professional, federal employee, and environmental science educator. Beyond the mentoring session, I loved being able to reconnect with friends and colleagues from across the state, as well as an awesome former student of mine! It was also great to make a few new connections along the way. Days like this are a great reminder of the strength and passion within Virginia’s environmental community! 🌱 Thank you to Virginia Wesleyan University for sending me to this event, to VNRLI for including me in the YP session, and to Kelly Altizer for the photo of me speaking at the YP session! An all-star alumni panel + a room full of curious students = a pretty incredible Monday evening at Virginia Wesleyan University! 🌟 It was so fun and rewarding to organize and host an all-star alumni panel for Earth & Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, and Sustainability Management students at Virginia Wesleyan University on Monday evening. The room was full of students eager to learn from former VWU graduates who are now building careers dedicated to creating a healthier, more sustainable world. Their curiosity and engagement made the evening especially rewarding. A sincere thank you to our outstanding panelists, Katie Crum (Kimley-Horn), Sydney Covey (STRUCTR Advisors), Mayanni McCourty (VA DEQ), and Phoebe Murrell (Elizabeth River Project) for generously sharing your time, insights, and professional journeys. Your perspectives offered invaluable guidance to our students. Thank you as well to Kayleigh Poggioli from the VWU Office of Alumni Engagement for joining us and helping make the event feel extra special for our alumni panelists. I know firsthand the impact these experiences can have. As a student at VWU, attending an alumni talk helped inspire my decision to pursue a Master’s degree, an experience that truly shaped the trajectory of my future. It’s incredibly meaningful to now help create those same moments for our current students.

🌱 Seeking environmental professionals near Washington D.C.! I have a student who is doing an internship in D.C. this semester and she reached out to me looking to connect with environmental professionals in the D.C. area to learn about their career paths. Please reach out if you know someone who'd be willing to connect. Here's what she sent me, "I wanted to inquire in hopes that you may know some people in the DC area that would be willing to chat about their career/work? It does not have to be people strictly tied to natural resources nor do they have to be currently working in an EES field, more than anything I am hoping to gain insight from those who have done professional environmental work at one time or another." | 10 comments on LinkedIn

Thank you to the UF/IFAS Department of Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences and Mike Loizzo for featuring me in the alumni spotlight in the latest issue of the Myakka Newsletter! I loved sharing how my time as a UF grad student not only prepared me for a great career with the USDA, but also gave me the tools to pass on my passion for soil science to students at my other alma mater, Virginia Wesleyan University! The 12 Orders of Soil Taxonomy | Allison Hammer
I'm excited to share the course project my Intro Soils students and I developed this semester: an ArcGIS StoryMap exploring the 12 orders of soil taxonomy. Many people aren’t aware of just how complex soils are or how dramatically they can vary across different landscapes, let alone that they’re classified using a formal taxonomy. Our goal was to make this topic engaging and accessible through an interactive format. This project also gave students hands-on experience with the ArcGIS StoryMaps platform, a first for all but one of them. While the final product contains a lot of information and may feel a bit overwhelming at times, I’m proud of what we created together. In hindsight, I might have assigned each student their own StoryMap and compiled them into a collection. Still, I’m thrilled with the outcome and their hard work! It is best viewed on a computer, not a phone. Check it out here: https://arcg.is/1a0XOq1 Virginia Wesleyan University #vwu #soil #soilscience #soiltaxonomy #storymap
